Or, as TV Tropes says in the WMG section for the Cthulhu Mythos: Consider the fact that he & his "brother" are similar to Azathoth & Nyarlathotep, who are said to be different aspects or components of the same entity. One is vaguely humanoid & intelligent, while the other is a blobby, apparently mindless tentacle monster...
Seriously, we have two pairs, both consisting of a Mr. Tall, Dark and Malevolent who knowingly seeks to destroy/fuck with humanity, and his largely unseen, uber destructive, tentacled better half.
I say Yog-Sothoth knowingly arranged for these similarities to happen when he, ahem, married Lavania Whateley.

I wouldn't say that Azathoth is the better half, since, last time I checked, he is a completely mindless, indifferent entity, kinda like the entropy of the cosmos. While Nyarlathotep has, unlike most elder gods, a personality, even though he's mostly malevolent (actually he's the only entity of whom that can be said, as the other Lovecraftian deities are completely neutral). Azathoth isn't better than Nyarlathotep, he just … is. If you get what I mean.
But yeah, it would be just like Yog-Sothoth to do something like that. I have to read Lovecraft again. If only it was easier to get my hands on library books that aren't huge and heavy things instead of being portable and handy. XD
